2015 Annual Debut Novel/Novella Prize

Thank you to everyone who entered this competition. Our Ian Gregson, our adjudicator, had a very strong longlist to work through. Finally, Ian wrestled the list down to ten extremely promising and strong submissions:

  • Fleeing to Angels by Michael Jenkins;
  • The Red Circle by Maria Apichella;
  • Under the Pipal Tree by Anjana Chowdhury;
  • Starting Over by Erik Lofroth;
  • The Matter by Stephanie Percival;
  • Tales for the Greenhills by Terry Melia;
  • Never Look Back by Ashleigh Davies;
  • A Beginner's Guide to Childhood by Isobel Allen;
  • Entertaining Angels by Petina Strohmer; and
  • Black Sheep Cottage by Michelle Pashley.

So difficult was the next stage, that Ian read the whole manuscript from six short-listed entrants:

  • The Red Circle by Maria Apichella;
  • Under the Pipal Tree by Anjana Chowdhury;
  • Starting Over by Erik Lofroth;
  • The Matter by Stephanie Percival;
  • Entertaining Angels by Petina Strohmer; and
  • Black Sheep Cottage by Michelle Pashley.

These were all strong manuscripts, so much so that we're delighted to announce that three runners-up are now in our forward lists for 2016-2018, so congratulations (in alphabetical order) to:

  1. Michelle PashleyBlack Sheep Cottage;
  2. Stephanie PercivalThe Matter; and
  3. Petina StrohmerEntertaining Angels.

The winner had to be outstanding in this competition and Ian was particularly impressed with Anjana Chowdhury's Under the Pipal Tree. Huge congratulations to Anjana, whose novel will be available early in 2017.
